What’s the latest with Ballpark NEXT?

Ballpark NEXT is the process to determine what will happen to the Smith’s Ballpark after the Bees leave at the end of this season.

Thanks to everyone in our community who have dedicated time to working on this critical issue. Residents have attended open houses, completed surveys, and served on a visioning committee. And we are just getting started! It is a lot to keep track of, and it is crucial that we continue to be engaged with the progression of the Ballpark NEXT process. This article will bring you up to date and share ways to stay in the loop.

What has happened recently?

At this point, a vision and set of guiding principles, created with resident input, have been adopted. These will guide the next steps and are the foundation of future plans.

Vision

The future Ballpark site is an iconic, exciting destination for the neighborhood, city and region. It is a catalyst for the transformation of the neighborhood, attracting people and development that uplifts and celebrates the area and its residents.

Guiding principles

  • Neighborhood safety and activation / Safety in every stride

  • Connectivity / Interwoven

  • Natural geography / Be green

  • Wellness / Culture of health

  • Community Centered / A space for every face

  • Acknowledge the past / honor the neighborhood's history

For much more detail on how these can influence plans and designs, check out the Ballpark Next website run by the City. It is the best way to keep on top of the project.

What’s next?

Once selected, the Design Consultant Team will work with Ballpark community member representatives, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, the Redevelopment Agency, City Council, and the Miller Family Foundation to determine a “shared vision of success” for the 13-acre site through an Urban Design Framework. This is basically a set of design guidelines – not the final product – that recommends how to incorporate community preferences on the site such as green space, where new buildings should be located, where parking should be located, what events could take place on the site, if and how the current stadium can be reused given its condition, etc. That document will be used to communicate what we are looking for to developers and investors who the City may partner with to construct portions of the project. This takes place through a Request for Development Proposals or RFP. In sum, it is a process! If you want to dive into the details, it's all laid out here

When will we have a final design? When will construction start?

The goal is to have the Urban Design Framework in place approximately eight months after hiring the consultant.

How can I be involved?

Community members are encouraged to check back on the City’s website for project updates and future community meetings. Information can also be relayed to the City through BAT.
